Types of Opioid Pain Meds

 

Hydrocodone, Oxycodone

  • Tablet form
  • For moderate to severe pain
  • Is taken every 4-6 hours
  • Usual dose 5-10 mg

Morphine

  • Comes in liquid and tablet
  • For moderate to severe pain
  • Liquid form can be taken more frequently than 4 hours (ask Hospice Team)
  • Usual dose 5-10 mg

Fentanyl

  • Comes as patch lasting 72 hours
  • For moderate to severe pain
  • Different strengths are available

Methadone

  • Tablet and liquid available
  • Long acting and strong
  • For moderate to severe pain
  • Can be useful to decrease number of pain pills taken

Summary

  • Tablets should not be chewed, but can be crushed (ask Hospice Team)
  • Talk with your Hospice Team if a stronger dose or more frequent dosing is needed
  • Always take a laxative if taking Opioids (unless told otherwise by the Hospice Team)
