The oxygen in a tank/concentrator is not like the air we breathe. It is highly concentrated and under
pressure.
Oxygen in this form is flammable.

Risk of fire

Smoking in the same room is never allowed
No heat source within 10 feet of the oxygen unit
No use of aerosol sprays, alcohol rubs/lotions/Vicks on or near the individual usingoxygen
No electrical outlets or extension cords within 10 feet of the oxygen unit

The oxygen unit needs to be secured in place so it does not fall over or disturbed
Do not store or place under a bed or under clothing or blankets
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby

The Hospice Team will provide the oxygen unit/concentrator and the tubing If the tubing becomes soiled or damaged, ask the Hospice Team to change it
The hospice doctor or nurse will let you know what rate to run the oxygen
Familiarize yourself with how to turn the tank on and off. Ask the Hospice Team for help
Oxygen flowing through the tube into the nose can be drying. There are humidifiers thatcan help. Ask the Hospice Team for recommendations
Do not change the flow rate without asking your Hospice Team
